Hardwood Flooring Buffing

A fast refresh for dull floors — improved sheen, cleaner look, and added protection.

When your finish is worn but the wood is still in great shape, buffing is the smart move. It smooths light surface marks and sets the floor up for a fresh protective recoat.

Hardwood Flooring Buffing

Buffing is the perfect option when your hardwood looks dull or lightly scratched, but doesn’t need a full sand-and-refinish. It refreshes the surface, improves sheen, and helps extend the life of your finish.

When buffing is the right choice

Buffing (also called a “screen & recoat” in many cases) is ideal when the finish is worn, not the wood itself.

Great for

Buffing restores clarity and shine without sanding down to bare wood.

  • Dull finish and light surface scratches
  • Minor scuffs in high-traffic paths
  • Refreshing sheen (matte / satin / semi-gloss)
  • Extending the life of your current top coat

Not ideal for

If the damage goes beyond the finish layer, refinishing may be the better option.

  • Deep scratches into the wood
  • Major discoloration or severe water damage
  • Uneven boards or floor movement issues
  • Old finish that’s peeling or failing

Sheen + top coat options

We’ll recommend the right finish based on traffic, pets, and the look you want.

  • Matte (soft, modern look)
  • Satin (most popular, hides wear well)
  • Semi-gloss (brighter, more reflective)
  • Durable protective recoats as needed

FAQ

How long does hardwood buffing take?
Many buffing jobs can be completed in a day, depending on square footage and dry time for the recoat.
Will buffing remove scratches?
Buffing improves light surface scratches in the finish layer. Deep scratches into the wood typically require refinishing or repair.
How soon can I walk on the floors?
Light foot traffic is often possible after the finish sets, but we’ll advise based on your specific recoat and cure time.
Is buffing cheaper than refinishing?
Usually, yes — it’s less labor-intensive and avoids sanding down to bare wood, making it a great value when appropriate.
